Honour Way

Following close to four fantastic years working for Tongabezi Lodge in Livingstone, Zambia, time has arrived to face the next challenge: Re-entering civilisation!!!

I hereby introduce you to  which I proudly launched on the 1st February 2008.

Honour Way was set up in response to clients’ demands for a more personalised and effective service covering not only Great Britain, but also the European Continent as a whole. The aim is to provide a personal and exclusive service to a small number of luxury lodges who understand that old fashioned service and attention to detail really can make the difference. Honour Way is committed to take on only a select few clients ensuring they complement each other and all follow a similar level of quality standards.

To honour this mission statement I am really pleased to announce that I start Honour Way with the following wonderful clients, Tongabezi and Sausage Tree Camp in Zambia and the Uganda Safari Company in Uganda.

ZAMBIA

The abolishment of the visa waivers and increase in visa fees of the 25th January 2008 is still very much the topic of the day. Everyone is working towards arriving at a satisfactory and speedy conclusion. Currently questionnaires are being collated by Adam Pope on behalf of all associations involved to be presented to the government this week. I will keep you up to date on this issue and the outcome.

Go Nuts for Tongabezi Lodge’s 11the room, a new House due to open in June.

As is tradition at Tongabezi, convention is abandoned with glee and their new house, opening in May, incorporates diverse elements of Africa. It begs to be discovered.

A haven from the elements, it is entirely enclosed with light streaming in through every wall. Even the back wall is interspersed by glass tiles which reflect the sunrise in African patterns onto the wood and stone floors. Folding glass doors open into the private garden and infinity plunge pool, all offering spectacular views over the Zambezi from the elevated position on the river bank.

Sindabezi Island is having an island style makeover with imported kikoy fabrics updating all our soft furnishings in the gentle pastel stripes of Africa. The new look will complement the white sand that carpets the island perfectly.

– and the Tongabezi gardens are also quietly undergoing a revolution.

Although Africa will never surrender her nuisance and mischief, it is not at all difficult to find a reason to celebrate on this great continent.

For April and May why not consider a package with Tongabezi Lodge as it is now also possible to get flights from Livingstone to Lusaka in time for the British Airways day flight to London.

I am so excited to bring The Uganda Safari Company into my portfolio and will be visiting this magnificent country in the second half of March. I can’t wait to share my first hand experience with you! Untouched by mass tourism, Uganda's parks and reserves are ideal retreats for the discerning eco-tourist. The experience is completely unique and very different from safaris in the rest of Africa. No tarmac roads through the parks, no mass convergence of overland trucks and no animals turning up by appointment to visit those masses! It is back to basics – as it’s all about tracking your game and then experiencing the complete thrill of finding the unexpected on your path.

The camps and lodges are small, private, distinctive and very involved in wilderness conservation and the wellness of local communities. The four properties are very diverse, both geographically and in design.

Enjoy the wide open spaces of the Kidepo Valley National park at Apoka lodge, tucked into the North-Eastern corner of Uganda where it meets Sudan and Kenya. Wildlife in this national park is plentiful and much of it can be spotted from your own verandah but better still get out on foot to explore the area.

Guests at Semliki Safari Lodge have the whole valley to themselves, and can accompany the resident researcher into the forest to see what the local communities of chimpanzees have planned for the day.

Landing in Emtebbe / Kampala, you should consider whiling away a couple of days in historical Kampala’s original boutique hotel in preparation for the adventures to come. The hotel is centrally located yet feels a million miles away from the busy city centre in its own peaceful landscaped gardens.

And finally: New to the collection this year –

‘Clouds’, with exclusive rights to gorilla permits, is being built to cater to those who track the Nkuringo group of gorillas, situated on the other side of Bwindi. Up until now it has been challenging to get to this side of the park, but with the opening of Clouds, our guests will be able to walk from their private cottage to the starting point and even better, no long journey back to the lodge at the end of a day’s gorilla tracking.
